With Sports Illustrated laying off much of its staff last week due to the magazine’s publisher failing to make licensing payments, sports fans are grappling with what the magazine’s expected, and frankly, inevitable, demise means for sports journalism. With the death of SI, not only will people lose their jobs, but collective sports fans will lose the famed SI cover. As The New York Times refers to the SI cover in a brilliant article, “A faded canvas that once defined sports.”
Beyond showcasing world-class photography, the magazine’s visage also encapsulated everything that makes sports special, including the cultural significance of sports and the emotional power won and lost on courts, fields, tracks, and rinks around the world. Getting the coveted SI cover spot meant so much to so many, including sports photographers, and while the writing has been on the wall for years, it’s sad to see Sports Illustrated go.
