HP’s New 4K 240Hz OLED Monitor Can Drag and Drop Files Across Devices
HP announced a huge number of new computers, peripherals, and displays at CES this week, but a standout addition is a 32-inch, 4K, 240Hz monitor that uses a “smart KVM” that allows users to drag and drop files across devices.
While the company didn’t go into significant detail regarding the feature, what HP is promising is highly unusual. The new Omen Transcend 32 UHD 240Hz OLED Gaming Monitor is, as evidenced by its name, designed for gaming. However, given how many ask their work-from-home desks to do double-duty as a “battle station,” it makes sense that HP would equip its latest high-end gaming monitor with some work utility.
That comes in the form of a ton of ports and some nifty software to back them up. For display, the Omen Transcend 32 comes with a single DisplayPort 2.1, two HDMI 2.1 ports, and a USB-C upstream port capable of DisplayPort Alt mode, 140W of power delivery, and it supports AdaptiveSync.
Beyond display, the monitor also features three USB-A 3.2 downstream (10Gbs/7.5W) ports and one each of a USB-C 3.2 downstream (10Gbs/15W power delivery) and USB-C upstream (15W and data connection) ports. Because of this connectivity, the Omen Transcend 32 is able to connect to two devices simultaneously and with built-in software can show both connections at the same time via picture-in-picture.
Users can switch between the two connected devices at any time and, because of the data connection built in with the KVM switch, are able to “drag and drop” between the two devices. In practice, it would theoretically look like dragging a file from one desktop to the other. On the backend, the file is very likely just being copied from its original location and transferred, via the USB-C connection, to the other computer in the same manner that it is possible to move a file from an external SSD to a computer.
This is, of course, speculation as HP hasn’t fully detailed exactly how the system works.
That aside, the actual performance of the Omen Transcend 32 looks impressive. It promises a 1,500,000:1 contrast ratio across its 4K UHD, 240Hz refresh rate, and 0.3 millisecond response time panel — insane specs that will absolutely appeal to gamers. It is also the Omen line’s first to feature Dolby Vision support and is also the first to be certified with VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400, which HP says provides up to 50 times greater dynamic range and a 4x improvement in rise time compared to DisplayHDR 1000.
The display promises a peak brightness of 1,000 nits in HDR and a 178-degree viewing angle. HP didn’t state the maximum framerate the display can output when using HDMI 2.1, although it will likely cap out at 144Hz — 120Hz is all but guaranteed.
The HP Omen Transcend 32 Gaming Monitor is expected to be available later this year and pricing will be shared closer to availability.
